The Marblehead Class is a so called development class. This means, that there are some rules how the boat should look like, and every boat is allowed to race in this class, as long as the class rules are followed. The most imporant rules for the Marblehead class is the maximum hull length of 50 inches and a sail area of 800 inches (bacause of which the class is sometimes also referred as "50/800 class". As the concept dates back to the 1930s, the Marblehead class is one of the most common classes around the world. This makes raing a Marblehead also highly competitive. Hulls, riggs and fittings tend to use the most advanced (and expensive) materials. A good article about the history of the Marblehead Class is available on U.S. Vintage Model Yacht Club's webpage - just click here.
