Right now in Central Park:

Since the very beginning of model boating there is natural mindset, that small boats have to be considered for small people, i.e kids. As a matter of fact, model boating is an activity you can start with a limited budget. However, the attration of such a boat usually diminishes very quick. As soon as you understood the basics, there is no thrill any more. This is especially true for power boats. How ever, as soon as there are other boats on the lake, the real challenge starts: who is the first on the other side?

Racing is the real threat! To be successful, you have to have a competitive boat, you must develop a race strategy and you must control your boat. For racing purpose, boats are devided into several "classes". Each class has more or less specific rules how the boat has to look like.

If you intend to buy or build a model boat, you should first get in contact with other model boaters in your area, so you know what classes they are racing. You might even get a chance to borrow a boat for a race or even purchase a used one ("real" racers tend to always need the newest boat, which produces good opportunities for newcommers!)

On Conservatory Lake we race "IOM", "Marblehead" and "36/600". The most active class is right now the IOM with races every Saturday.

An overview over classes sailed in the US can be found on AMYA's website.
